Hey, just thinking about upgrading our WhisperFlo pump (in service for 20 years) to an IntelliFlo. Will I save money? Even with the cost to upgrade?…more

How Long Can a Pool Stay Closed? Duration & Safety Limits
Between the winter thaw and spring opening every year, I'm left wondering if my pool's been closed too long and the water is now unsafe. My facility requires extended closure periods for various operational reasons, and I want to establish clear protocols for both planned seasonal shutdowns and emergency closures.
Specifically, I'm looking for data on maximum safe closure timeframes before water chemistry becomes unmanageable and equipment integrity is compromised. What are the industry standards for winterized pools versus temporary emergency closures?…more

Does Variable Speed Pool Pump Need Timer? Complete Guide
Looked outside this morning and my variable speed pump is cycling on and off randomly throughout the day without any timer system programmed. My kids swim every day after school and I want to make sure the water is always properly circulated and filtered for their safety.
The pump has its own programming features, but I'm concerned about what happens if something goes wrong with the built-in controls. Would having a backup timer give me better peace of mind and help ensure the pool stays clean and safe? I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything that could affect water quality when my children are swimming.…more

How to Program Variable Speed Pool Pump - Complete Guide
Nobody warned me that after the pool guy installed my new variable speed pump yesterday, I'd be staring at this digital display like it's speaking ancient Greek. The installer basically ran off after hooking it up and now I'm supposed to figure out how to program different speeds throughout the day.
I get that I'm supposed to run it at different RPMs at different times to save energy, but honestly have no clue where to start. Like, what speeds should I use and when? And how do I actually punch this stuff into the control panel? My old single-speed pump was so much simpler - just flip the switch and forget about it!…more

Pool Heater Lifespan in Florida: How Long They Last
Turned on my pool heater this morning and noticed those same rust spots on my 8-year-old unit are definitely getting worse. With three young kids who love to swim year-round, having consistently warm water is important for their comfort and safety.
I've been looking at both gas heaters and electric heat pump options, but I'm concerned about how Florida's climate might affect their lifespan. The humidity here is intense, and we're close enough to the coast that salt air is definitely a factor. Should I expect to replace the heater more frequently than if we lived somewhere with milder weather? I want to budget appropriately and ensure we always have reliable heating for safe, comfortable swimming conditions.…more

Do I Need a Pool Cover? Winter Protection Requirements
Despite watching three neighbors deal with expensive freeze damage to their pools last winter, I'm still on the fence about whether my 20,000 gallon inground pool actually needs a cover. We live in a climate where temperatures drop below freezing for about 3-4 months of the year, and I currently spend a fortune on heating costs during shoulder seasons plus constantly dealing with leaves and debris that require daily skimming.
I've been going back and forth on this decision because of the upfront cost, but I'm curious about the long-term benefits. My current chemical usage seems excessive - I'm adding chlorine tablets twice weekly and shock treatment every 10 days just to maintain proper levels around 2-3 ppm. The constant debris also means my filtration system works overtime.
For those with experience, how much difference does a pool cover actually make in terms of chemical reduction, heating efficiency, and overall maintenance? Is it truly essential for winter protection in freezing climates, or more of a nice-to-have convenience feature?…more

Can You Cover a Pool Heater? Complete Winterizing Guide
Three different "experts" just gave me three different answers about covering my pool heater for winter — my neighbor says always cover it, the pool store says never, and YouTube is all over the place. My pool heater is a significant investment, and I'm concerned about potential damage from winter weather, debris accumulation, and moisture intrusion during the months it won't be operational.
What's the recommended protocol for covering pool heaters during winter storage? I need to understand the proper materials and methods to prevent condensation issues while still providing adequate weather protection. Are there specific cover types designed for pool heating equipment, or should I avoid covering altogether to prevent moisture-related problems?…more

Inground Pool Costs: Complete Installation Price Guide 2026
Apparently planning to tackle our inground pool installation this spring — what should I have budgeted and ready before contractors start calling back? Some contractors are quoting us wildly different amounts and I can't tell what's reasonable.
I know there are different types of pools - concrete, vinyl liner, and fiberglass - but I have no idea which offers the best value for a family with young children. We want something safe and durable that won't break the bank, but we also don't want to cut corners on quality when it comes to our kids' safety.
Can someone break down what I should realistically expect to spend on each type of inground pool? I just want to make sure we're budgeting appropriately and not getting taken advantage of by contractors.…more

How Long to Run Your Pool Pump and Filter Daily - Complete Guide
Every pool season I feel like an idiot asking this, but I genuinely have no idea how many hours my filter should actually be running daily. My kids swim almost every day during summer, and I want to make sure the water stays clean and safe for them. I've heard different opinions - some neighbors say they run theirs 24/7, while others only run it a few hours.
I'm worried about under-filtering and having bacteria or algae grow, but I also don't want to waste electricity if it's not necessary. Our pool gets heavy use with the kids and their friends, plus we've had some really hot weather lately. What's the right balance for daily filter runtime to keep the water properly clean?…more

Do Fiberglass Pools Need Calcium Hardness? Complete Guide
Pool builder says my new fiberglass shell doesn't need calcium hardness adjustments like a plaster pool does. But the water test shows 150 ppm and the internet says that's too low for any pool. Who's right here — does fiberglass actually need calcium or not?…more
Can I Store Pool Chemicals Outside? Safe Storage Guide
Halfway through my morning coffee, I spotted my pool chemicals sitting in direct sunlight by my detached shed that definitely weren't there yesterday. Shed gets hot/cold with seasons and sometimes damp. Garage stays more consistent but still gets chilly in winter.
Which is better for storing chlorine, muriatic acid, and shock? Or do I need to bring everything indoors? Just want to avoid any safety issues or chemicals going bad.…more

How to Lower Pool Alkalinity: Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Pulled three different recommendations for my 180 ppm alkalinity—pool guy wants muriatic acid, store pushes sodium bisulfate, and online forums are completely split. Need to get it down to proper range. What chemicals work best and how much should I use? Pool is about 10,000 gallons.…more
Can I Turn Pool Pump Off at Night? Complete Owner's Guide
This electric bill is destroying my budget and I can't afford to keep this pool pump running 24/7 — is it safe to shut it off nights?
The pool store told me the pump should run constantly, but my neighbor says he turns his off at night to save on electricity costs.
I'm worried about messing something up since this is all new to me. Is it actually safe to turn the pump off overnight, or will that cause problems with the water? If I can turn it off, how many hours should it still be running each day to keep everything clean and healthy?…more

Do Pools Need Calcium? Complete Hardness Level Guide
Noticed my 15,000 gallon inground pool is still etching the plaster walls even though pH and chlorine levels are perfectly balanced. Have a plaster pool and not sure what levels to target. Also curious if vinyl and fiberglass pools need different ranges.
