Do Pools Need Chlorine? Essential Pool Sanitizer Guide

Between my neighbor claiming pools don't need chlorine with proper balance, the pool store insisting it's essential, and YouTube giving conflicting advice, I'm completely lost.

Are there other options besides chlorine? I've heard people mention saltwater pools and UV systems - do those work just as well? I want to keep my family safe but also don't want to over-complicate things as a beginner. What's the most reliable way to keep pool water clean and safe?…more

Hot Tub & Spa Water Care Guide: Complete Chemistry Manual 2026

Hot tub water care requires maintaining proper pH (7.4-7.6), alkalinity (80-120 ppm), and sanitizer levels while following regular testing and chemical adjustment schedules. Higher temperatures and smaller water volumes make spas more sensitive to chemical imbalances than pools.…more

Does My Pool Need Phosphate Remover? Complete Guide 2026

I tried everything to prevent algae blooms, but my pool only gets green when temperatures hit 85°F or higher—my pool store insists phosphate remover is the solution.

My pool currently has balanced pH and alkalinity, and I maintain chlorine at recommended levels. I'm wondering if phosphate removal should be a regular part of my maintenance routine, or if there are specific conditions where it becomes necessary. What's the technical perspective on when phosphate removers actually provide measurable benefits versus when they're just an additional expense?…more

How Salt Water Pools Kill Bacteria - Chlorine Generation Process

Switched from a chlorine pool to saltwater last year and my pool store says I don't need to worry about bacteria anymore because the salt cell handles everything. That sounds too good to be true. How does a salt water pool actually kill bacteria compared to dumping chlorine tablets in?…more

Do Salt Water Pools Have Chlorine? Yes - Here's Why

Already asked my neighbor about her "chlorine-free" saltwater pool, but mine definitely has chlorine — what am I missing here? I have a 20,000 gallon inground pool and I'm considering converting to a salt water system because I thought it meant no more dealing with chlorine chemicals. My neighbor has been telling me that salt water pools are "chlorine-free" and that's why they're gentler on skin and eyes.

But when I was talking to a pool supply store, the guy mentioned something about salt water pools still having chlorine, just generated differently? I'm confused because if there's still chlorine involved, what's the actual difference? I've been manually adding liquid chlorine to my pool for years and my levels typically run around 2-3 ppm, but I'm tired of the constant chemical additions and storage issues.

Can someone explain whether salt water pools actually contain chlorine or not? And if they do, how does that work with the salt system?…more

Does Cloudy Pool Water Mean Algae? Diagnosis Guide

Walked out to my 20,000 gallon inground pool this morning and the crystal clear water from three days ago is now completely cloudy. They've been asking to use the pool, but I'm worried this cloudiness might mean we have an algae problem that could make them sick.

I'm not sure what's causing the cloudiness - could it be algae starting to grow, or might there be other reasons? How can I tell the difference between algae and other issues that cause cloudy water? I want to make sure I properly diagnose what's wrong before letting the kids back in the pool.…more

Do You Need Pool Chemicals? Essential Chemicals for Safe Water

Last weekend I grabbed my pool testing kit and decided to handle the chemistry myself — just need to figure out which chemicals are actually essential versus marketing hype. My neighbor swears by minimal chemical use while the pool store keeps pushing different products on me.

What chemicals do you ACTUALLY need to keep a pool safe for swimming? I don't want to over-treat my water with unnecessary stuff, but I also don't want anyone getting sick. Just looking for the bare minimum essentials that are truly required for safe, swimmable water.…more

How Pool Salt Cells Work: Complete Guide to Salt Water Generation

Wondering why my salt cell's red blinking light contradicts what the pool store tech said about it still producing chlorine normally? What actually happens when electricity hits the salt water? How do the titanium plates convert salt into chlorine?

Looking for the technical process - not just 'it makes chlorine' but the actual chemical breakdown and how the sanitizer gets produced automatically.…more

Do Pools Have Chlorine? Pool Sanitization Methods Explained

Three weeks ago my wife mentioned that she could smell chlorine around our pool area and it got me thinking - do all pools actually contain chlorine? I always assumed they did but now I'm second-guessing myself. We have a basic above-ground pool and I've been adding chemicals but honestly I'm not 100% sure what's in them or if chlorine is definitely one of the ingredients. My wife is concerned about the kids swimming in chlorinated water and wants to know if there are pools that don't use chlorine at all. I feel pretty clueless about what's actually keeping our water clean.…more

Does Pool Algae Consume Chlorine? Understanding Chlorine Loss

About every time the temperature hits 85°F outside, my pool's chlorine levels nosedive to almost nothing, but stay rock solid during cooler days. I'm adding the same amount of chlorine I normally do, but it seems like it's disappearing quickly. A friend mentioned that algae might actually be 'eating' or consuming the chlorine somehow. Is this actually what's happening? I'm trying to understand the science behind it so I can tackle this problem more effectively. Should I be adding more chlorine, or is there a different approach I should take?…more

Do I Need to Shock My Pool Every Week? Complete Guide

Called three pool stores about weekly shock treatments and they're all pushing $15 products, but is this actually necessary or just a sales pitch? My pool has been relatively clear lately and I've been pretty good about keeping up with daily chlorine levels. But then I had one algae outbreak earlier this season and now I'm paranoid about skipping the weekly shock treatment. Is weekly shocking really required, or are there specific situations when I actually need to do it? I want to maintain a healthy pool without going overboard on chemicals.…more

Do I Need Pool Closing Chemicals? Complete Winter Guide

Staring at my pool after that brutal cold snap hit last week, I'm scrambling to winterize but drowning in conflicting advice about which chemicals I actually need. Some people say I need a whole arsenal of closing chemicals, others tell me just throw a tarp on it and call it good.

I really don't want to deal with a swamp when I open it back up in spring, but I also don't want to buy a bunch of stuff I don't actually need. What are the must-have chemicals for winterizing? I've heard about algaecide and antifreeze but not sure what else or if those are even necessary.…more

How Salt Water Pool Systems Work: Complete Guide 2026

Despite my pool guy insisting I need to understand salt water electrolysis to maintain my system, his overly technical explanation makes me think he's overcomplicating things.
Specifically, what happens at the cellular level when salt water passes through the system? How does dissolved sodium chloride get converted into an effective sanitizing agent, and what role does electrolysis play in this conversion process? I want to grasp the complete operational mechanism before investing in this technology.…more

Ducks in Your Pool? How to Keep Them Out for Good

Three straight days of rain last week apparently convinced a pair of mallards that my backyard pool is their new favorite pond. Every morning I come out and they're splashing around on the steps and leaving droppings all along the waterline and on the surrounding deck. It's pretty gross to deal with, and I'm starting to wonder whether the water itself is even safe to swim in after all that.

I've heard mixed things about those floating alligator decoys or the big plastic swan deterrents you can buy online — do those actually work, or do ducks wise up to them pretty quickly? I'd rather not spend money on something that only works for a week before they ignore it completely.

My bigger concern right now is honestly the water safety side of things. Is duck waste a real health hazard for swimmers, or am I overthinking it? And if I do need to treat the pool after a duck visit, what's the right way to do that? We have a 20,000-gallon in-ground with a salt chlorinator if that matters.…more
