Do You Need a Pool Heater Bypass? Installation Guide

Before I connect my new pool heater to the system, it's making this weird whistling sound when water flows through and now I'm wondering if a bypass valve would fix it. The manufacturer's documentation mentions bypass considerations, but I need clarity on whether this is mandatory or optional equipment.

Specifically, I'm concerned about maintaining proper flow rates through the heating unit and having the ability to isolate the heater during routine maintenance procedures. What are the technical requirements and operational benefits of incorporating a bypass valve system into the heater plumbing layout?…more

Does My Pool Need Calcium Hardness? Essential Guide

Called the pool store about my new place and they're saying my calcium hardness levels from March's water test are completely out of whack. For the past three years, I've been diligent about testing chlorine, pH, and alkalinity weekly using test strips, but I've never paid attention to calcium hardness levels. My pool store mentioned it during my last water analysis visit in March, but I honestly wasn't sure if it was just an upsell.

Recently, I've noticed some minor scaling around the waterline tiles and my pool cleaner seems to be working harder than usual. The pool is located in Phoenix, Arizona, so we deal with hard water from the tap and intense evaporation during summer months. I top off the water about twice a week during peak season. Should calcium hardness be something I'm actively managing, or is it less critical for fiberglass pools compared to plaster finishes?…more

Pool Heating in Orlando October - Do You Need It?

Replaced my old pool setup last month and probably a dumb question, but do I really need those expensive heaters for October swimming in Orlando? He's claiming I "absolutely need it" but given how much they've already upsold me on overpriced chemicals, I'm skeptical.

I'm trying to figure out if the water temperature actually drops enough in October to make swimming uncomfortable, or if this is just another way for them to empty my wallet. Anyone have real experience swimming in unheated Orlando pools during October? Is it actually too cold without heating or can you still enjoy it?…more

Pool Fence Requirements: Do You Need One? Safety Guide 2026

According to my contractor, I'm looking at $3,200 for pool fencing and wondering if it's actually legally required before my installation is complete.

Anyone know the actual requirements? Like how deep does a pool have to be before you need fencing, and are there specific rules about the fence height or gate types? Just want to make sure I'm following all the safety regulations and not getting hit with any surprise violations from the city!…more

How to Tell if Your Pool Pump Isn't Working Properly

This 4-year-old pool pump is turning my once-crystal-clear water cloudy and stagnant — is it worth repairing or should I just replace the whole thing? I'm not super technical when it comes to pool equipment, so I'm not sure what warning signs I should be watching for.

What are the telltale signs that indicate my pump isn't doing its job properly? I want to catch any problems before they turn into expensive repairs or leave me with a swamp instead of a swimming pool!…more

Can You Use Pool pH Down for Plants? Safety Guide

Our pool guy insists we need expensive soil amendments for our alkaline garden, but why can't we just use the pH down from our pool supplies? They're looking pretty sad and I know lowering the pH would help. Got me thinking - could I just use some of this pool chemical to fix my soil instead of buying garden stuff? I mean, it's designed to lower pH, right?

Before I potentially kill my tomatoes, figured I should ask if anyone's tried this. Is pool pH down safe for plants or am I about to create a gardening disaster?…more

Do You Need a Variable Speed Pool Pump? Complete Guide 2026

Single speed pump is killing my electric bill but variable speed pumps cost $800-1500 installed. Pool guy swears it'll pay for itself in two years on energy savings alone. Sounds like a sales pitch but I keep hearing the same thing from other pool owners too. Are variable speed pumps actually worth the upgrade?…more

Can Pool Heater and Pump Share Same Circuit? Info Guide

Finally it's midnight and my pool heater tripped the breaker for the third time tonight — desperately need to know if wiring both heater and pump together is causing this mess. The pool store is pushing me to hire their electrician for thousands of dollars, but I'm handy with electrical work and want to do this myself if possible.

Before I start running wiring, I need to know if there are any safety issues with putting both the heater and pump on one circuit. They're both major electrical components so I want to make sure I'm not creating a fire hazard or code violation. Anyone have experience with DIY pool electrical work?…more

Can You Use Pool Chlorine in Washing Machine? Safety Guide

Despite my pool chlorine testing at 12.5% sodium hypochlorite, my laundry bleach bottle says 6% - can I actually use the stronger pool stuff in my washing machine? My understanding is that both pool chlorine and household bleach contain sodium hypochlorite as the active ingredient, but I need to verify the concentration differences and potential compatibility issues.

Specifically, I'm concerned about whether the higher concentration levels in pool chemicals could cause damage to washing machine components, fabric degradation, or create hazardous chemical reactions when mixed with detergents. What are the technical considerations and safety protocols I should evaluate before attempting this substitution?…more

Can Pool Liners Stretch? Above Ground Vinyl Liner Guide

Turned on my pool pump after winter and now my above ground liner looks completely different than it did last summer. There are these weird wrinkles that weren't there before, and some spots look thinner than others. My neighbor insists pool liners don't stretch, but something is definitely happening here.

The pool gets full sun most of the day and it's been brutally hot this year. I'm wondering if the heat and water pressure are actually causing the vinyl to stretch out? I'm trying to figure out if this is normal wear and tear or if I need to start budgeting for a new liner. Has anyone else noticed their liner changing over time?…more

Can Salt Water Pools Be Heated? Complete Heating Guide

Halfway through summer my salt water pool heater works perfectly when it's below 80 degrees outside, but shuts down completely once temperatures hit the mid-80s. My current setup uses a standard salt water chlorine generator, and I'm concerned about potential interference or operational conflicts when adding a heating system.

Specifically, I need to understand which heating methods work effectively with salt water systems - whether gas, electric, heat pump, or solar options present any technical limitations. Are there material compatibility requirements I should consider, particularly regarding corrosion resistance with the salt water chemistry?

Looking for precise guidance on heating system selection and any modifications needed to ensure reliable operation with my existing salt water generator setup.…more

How to Program Variable Speed Pool Pump - Complete Guide

Nobody warned me that after the pool guy installed my new variable speed pump yesterday, I'd be staring at this digital display like it's speaking ancient Greek. The installer basically ran off after hooking it up and now I'm supposed to figure out how to program different speeds throughout the day.

I get that I'm supposed to run it at different RPMs at different times to save energy, but honestly have no clue where to start. Like, what speeds should I use and when? And how do I actually punch this stuff into the control panel? My old single-speed pump was so much simpler - just flip the switch and forget about it!…more

Do Variable Speed Pool Pumps Run All The Time? Complete Guide

Apparently my pool guy wants $800 to install a variable speed pump that he claims runs 24/7, but I'm skeptical about whether that's really necessary. I'm particularly interested in understanding how they balance filtration requirements with energy efficiency, and whether the speed modulation eliminates the need for complete shutdown periods during normal operation.…more

Do Variable Speed Pool Pumps Really Save Money? Cost Analysis

I looked at my electric bill this morning and nearly choked when I saw it jumped $80 last month. My single-speed pump is absolutely killing my wallet, and I'm starting to wonder if upgrading to a variable speed pump would actually make a difference financially. The upfront cost seems pretty steep, but I keep hearing people say they save a ton on energy costs.

I really want to know if variable speed pumps actually deliver on those savings promises, and if so, how long it typically takes to break even on the investment. My current pump runs constantly and I swear it's single-handedly doubling my electric bill during pool season. Please tell me there's hope for getting these costs under control!…more
