Can Pool Chlorine Clean Concrete? Safe Methods & Alternatives

Between the humidity and recent rain, my concrete pool deck started showing these nasty green algae stains last week and now I'm wondering if pool chlorine can clean them off. My concrete pool deck is absolutely filthy with algae stains and dirt buildup, and nothing seems to work. I've scrubbed until my arms hurt and tried different cleaners, but these green stains just won't budge.

I have tons of pool chlorine sitting around and I'm wondering if I can use that to blast these concrete stains away? I don't want to damage the surface or create some kind of chemical disaster, but I'm running out of options. If chlorine works, what's the right way to dilute it? And honestly, are there better alternatives that might actually get this mess clean without all the guesswork?…more

Why Is the Lincoln Reflecting Pool Green—and Why Not Shock It?

I saw the photos of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool gone bright green again, days after they finished a big renovation. I run my own backyard pool, and when mine goes green I shock the daylights out of it and it clears up in a couple of days. So why is the government out there pouring hydrogen peroxide and scraping algae by hand off a national monument? Why don't they just shock the thing like the rest of us do? What am I missing?…more

Can You Use Pool Chlorine in Washing Machine? Safety Guide

Despite my pool chlorine testing at 12.5% sodium hypochlorite, my laundry bleach bottle says 6% - can I actually use the stronger pool stuff in my washing machine? My understanding is that both pool chlorine and household bleach contain sodium hypochlorite as the active ingredient, but I need to verify the concentration differences and potential compatibility issues.

Specifically, I'm concerned about whether the higher concentration levels in pool chemicals could cause damage to washing machine components, fabric degradation, or create hazardous chemical reactions when mixed with detergents. What are the technical considerations and safety protocols I should evaluate before attempting this substitution?…more

Can I Store Pool Chemicals Outside? Safe Storage Guide

Halfway through my morning coffee, I spotted my pool chemicals sitting in direct sunlight by my detached shed that definitely weren't there yesterday. Shed gets hot/cold with seasons and sometimes damp. Garage stays more consistent but still gets chilly in winter.

Which is better for storing chlorine, muriatic acid, and shock? Or do I need to bring everything indoors? Just want to avoid any safety issues or chemicals going bad.…more

Do Pool Chlorine Tablets Expire? Complete Shelf Life Guide

Walked into the garage yesterday and my wife called out my "chlorine tablet graveyard" from 2022, making me wonder if those old tablets are even safe to use.

The pool store guy keeps telling me I need fresh chemicals every year, but that seems like a money grab. How long do these tablets actually last, and how can I tell if mine have gone bad? I'm trying to save money by buying in bulk and storing extras, but I don't want to use something that could be dangerous or just won't work properly.…more

Can I Use Pool Chlorine Tablets in My Toilet? Safety Guide

Standing in my garage with a bucket of leftover trichlor tablets from last season and wondering if these can pull double duty as toilet bowl cleaners. My thinking is that chlorine is chlorine, right? I've seen those blue toilet bowl tablets that slowly dissolve and keep things clean, so I figured maybe I could just drop one of my 3-inch pool tablets in the tank to do the same thing.

Before I try this, I want to make sure it's actually safe for my plumbing and won't cause any problems. Are pool chlorine tablets too strong for toilet use? I don't want to damage my pipes or create any health hazards, but it seems like it could be a good way to use up these extra tablets instead of letting them go to waste.…more

Can Pool Filter Sand Be Used in Aquarium? Safety Guide

Three minutes into shopping for aquarium sand at $15 per tiny bag, I remembered the 50-pound bag of pool filter sand sitting in my garage. They want $25 for a tiny bag of "aquarium sand" when I can get a 50-pound bag of pool filter sand at the hardware store for half that price. It looks like the same stuff to me - just sand, right?

Before I make the switch and potentially harm my fish, I want to make sure this is actually safe. Has anyone successfully used pool filter sand in their aquarium, or are there real differences I should be worried about? I'm all for DIY solutions to save money, but not at the expense of my fish's health.…more

Can You Store Pool Chemicals in Garage? Safety Guide

Opened my garage door this morning and spotted my pool chemicals stacked right against my car bumper — pretty sure they weren't positioned there yesterday. New pool owner here and I'm trying to figure out where to store all these chemicals I just bought. My garage seems like the obvious choice since I have some shelving space, but I'm worried about temperature swings and whether it's actually safe. We get pretty hot summers here and the garage can get up to maybe 90-100°F on really hot days. Is this going to cause problems with chlorine tablets, shock, pH adjusters, and algaecide? Also wondering about keeping them away from other garage stuff like gas cans and lawn mower. Any advice would be really appreciated - still learning all this pool stuff!…more

Where to Drain a Saltwater Pool Safely

Found out the hard way that you can't just dump saltwater pool water wherever you want. Moved into this place a couple months ago and the previous owners left a saltwater pool I'm still figuring out. The water level was way too high after some heavy rain, so I pumped a bunch out into the backyard near one of the trees. About a week later the grass in that spot turned brown and the tree is looking very dead. Now I still need to lower the water level but I'm terrified to touch anything.

Where are you actually supposed to put saltwater pool water when you need to drain some out? Is the sewer cleanout pipe okay to use? Can you run it to the street gutter? I've heard you can spread it on grass but obviously my grass is dead where I tried that. How damaging is pool salt to trees and plants compared to, say, the chlorine? I want to fix this without killing anything else.…more

Pool Algaecide Types: Quat vs Poly-Quat vs Copper

Nobody warned me the algaecide aisle would feel like a chemistry exam. My pool store's manual just says 'add algaecide weekly,' but when I actually went to buy some, there were four completely different product types all using that same word — a cheap 'quat' bottle for $14, a poly-quat one for $50, a blue copper-based formula, and something mentioning sodium bromide. The manual acts like they're interchangeable, which clearly they're not given the price gap.

I've got a 20,000-gallon plaster pool that stays open May through October here in Georgia. Right now I'm in maintenance mode — no visible algae — but last summer I had a bad mustard algae breakout that took weeks to clear. I want to actually understand what I'm buying this time. Which of these types is doing what, which ones foam, which ones can stain my plaster, and which one makes the most sense for weekly prevention versus nuking an active bloom?…more

How to Spell Pool - Correct Spelling and Pool Terms Guide

It started with a few embarrassing typos in my pool maintenance logs last month and turned into me questioning every word I write about my 20,000-gallon inground system. Obviously I know how to spell the basic word "pool," but I want to be thorough and professional in my record-keeping.

When I'm documenting chemical treatments, test results, and communicating with pool service companies, proper spelling and terminology seems important for clear communication. I've noticed that using incorrect terms or spellings can sometimes lead to confusion when discussing maintenance procedures with professionals.

Can someone confirm the correct spelling of "pool" and explain why proper pool terminology matters when dealing with maintenance documentation and professional communications?…more

Can You Vacuum Pool on Recirculate? Complete Guide

Pulled a ton of storm debris out of our pool and now I'm trying to decide between normal filtration and recirculate mode for vacuuming.
The pool is so messy that I'm concerned about clogging up our filter system if I vacuum normally, but I also don't want to compromise water quality.

Can I vacuum the pool using the recirculate setting instead? I want to make sure I understand what this does - will it actually clean the water properly or just move things around? My main concern is whether the water will be safe and clean enough for the kids to swim in afterward, or if I need to take additional steps to ensure proper filtration.…more

Can You Use Pool Filter Sand in Your Garden? Complete Guide

During this morning's pool filter sand swap, I spotted this massive pile of perfectly good sand that I'm about to dump in the trash. The pool store told me it's just silica sand, but I'm worried about chemicals and chlorine that might still be in it from filtering pool water.

I've heard that sand can help with drainage in heavy clay soil, which I definitely have in my backyard. But I want to make sure I won't harm my plants or vegetables if I use the old filter sand. Do I need to clean it first or test it somehow? Any advice from experienced pool owners would be really helpful!…more

Do I Need a Pool Pump and Filter? Essential Equipment Guide

Finally listened to those YouTube "experts" who swore I could run my pool without a pump and filter, and now I'm staring at a green swamp in my backyard. I'm wondering if I actually NEED both a pump AND a filter, or if this is just another way for them to drain my wallet.

I've been trying to maintain my pool on a budget and looking into DIY solutions wherever possible. But before I spend hundreds (or thousands) on this equipment, I want to know - are pumps and filters truly essential for a safe, swimmable pool? Or can I get by without one or both of these expensive pieces of equipment?…more
