Can Pool Algae Cause a Rash? Health Risks & Prevention

Around noon yesterday I finished scrubbing down my pool walls but this morning there's green stuff growing back — could this algae be what's causing the rash on my arms? I've been swimming in it a few times and now I'm wondering if that could be causing the skin irritation I've been experiencing. The pool store told me it's algae and that I need to treat it, but I'm curious about the health risks.

Can pool algae actually cause rashes or other skin problems? I'm worried about my family swimming in it, and I want to understand what I'm dealing with before I start dumping chemicals in. Any guidance on how serious this is and what I should do to fix it would be really appreciated!…more

Can I Shock Pool After Adding Algaecide? Complete Guide

Spent all morning watching my pool turn green with algae patches and now I'm holding bottles of algaecide and shock with no clue which to use first. But I'm not sure about the timing - can I add both in the same day? Should I put the algaecide in first, or does it matter?

Also, if I can use both, how long should I wait between adding them? Don't want to mess up my water chemistry or waste expensive chemicals by doing this wrong!…more

Can You Shock Pool With High pH? Complete Chemistry Guide

This might be a stupid question but I'm literally at the pool store about to buy shock for my high pH pool — am I wasting my money? My pool is looking a bit cloudy and I know I need to shock it, but when I tested the water, the pH came back really high - like 7.8 or maybe even higher.

The guy at the pool store mentioned something about pH affecting chlorine, but I didn't really understand what he meant. Can I go ahead and shock the pool anyway, or do I absolutely need to get that pH down first? If I have to lower it first, how long do I need to wait? I'm worried about the water getting worse while I'm trying to fix the pH.…more

Can Pool Algae Be Brown? Types, ID & Treatment Guide

According to my pool guy I've done everything right — shocked twice, scrubbed every surface, ran the pump nonstop — but this mysterious brown crud keeps coming back. I know green algae is the usual suspect, but this stuff is definitely more brown/yellowish. Is that even a thing with pool algae?

I'm trying to figure out if I need to shock it like regular algae or if there's some other treatment I should be doing. Don't want to waste a bunch of chemicals if I'm treating the wrong problem!…more

Does Cloudy Pool Water Mean Algae? Diagnosis Guide

Walked out to my 20,000 gallon inground pool this morning and the crystal clear water from three days ago is now completely cloudy. They've been asking to use the pool, but I'm worried this cloudiness might mean we have an algae problem that could make them sick.

I'm not sure what's causing the cloudiness - could it be algae starting to grow, or might there be other reasons? How can I tell the difference between algae and other issues that cause cloudy water? I want to make sure I properly diagnose what's wrong before letting the kids back in the pool.…more

Can I Add Pool Chemicals at the Same Time? Safe Mixing Guide

Spent all week prepping for Saturday's pool party and now I'm scrambling to balance the water but wondering if I can add multiple chemicals together to save time.
The pool store gave me a bunch of different chemicals but didn't really explain the timing. I want to make sure I'm not going to create some dangerous reaction or mess up my water chemistry. Should I be spacing these out somehow?…more

Can You Vacuum Pool on Recirculate? Complete Guide

Pulled a ton of storm debris out of our pool and now I'm trying to decide between normal filtration and recirculate mode for vacuuming.
The pool is so messy that I'm concerned about clogging up our filter system if I vacuum normally, but I also don't want to compromise water quality.

Can I vacuum the pool using the recirculate setting instead? I want to make sure I understand what this does - will it actually clean the water properly or just move things around? My main concern is whether the water will be safe and clean enough for the kids to swim in afterward, or if I need to take additional steps to ensure proper filtration.…more

Can I Leave My Pool Filter On All The Time? Complete Guide

About to run my pool filter 24/7 this summer. Currently I'm running my filter system about 6 hours per day, but I've been dealing with some water clarity issues despite maintaining proper chlorine levels (2.5 ppm) and balanced pH (7.4). My pool gets heavy use from my family and I've noticed the water looks a bit cloudy by evening even after shocking. I'm wondering if I should just leave the filter running continuously to help with circulation and keep the water crystal clear, or if there's a sweet spot for daily runtime that balances effectiveness with energy costs. The pool is in full sun most of the day and we're in a fairly warm climate, so I want to make sure I'm getting adequate turnover without unnecessarily driving up my electric bill.…more

How Pool Chlorine Works: Complete Chemistry Guide 2026

Tried avoiding pool chemistry for years but finally planning to tackle understanding how chlorine actually works this Saturday — what basics should I have down first? I know chlorine kills bacteria and algae, but what's actually happening at the molecular level? Does pH really matter that much for it to work properly?

Also keep hearing about cyanuric acid affecting chlorine effectiveness. How does all this chemistry actually fit together?…more

Can Pool Chlorine Hurt Your Eyes? Complete Safety Guide

Opened a $200 urgent care bill for "chemical eye irritation treatment" last week and now I'm wondering if my pool chemistry is off and fixable myself. The burning is so bad that I can barely open them underwater, and they stay red and irritated for hours afterward. I've been adding chlorine regularly to keep the water clean, but now I'm worried - is this actually damaging my eyes?

I want to keep swimming but not if it's going to cause permanent harm. What kind of eye problems can chlorine actually cause, and how do I know if my levels are too high? I'm hoping there's a way to balance everything properly so I can enjoy my pool without feeling like I'm putting acid in my eyes every time I dive in.…more

Do I Need to Run My Pool Pump Every Day? Complete Guide

Three hours of constant humming from my pool pump has me wondering if that grinding undertone means I'm overworking it or not running it enough. I have a 20,000-gallon inground pool that gets moderate use from my family of four, plus occasional guests on weekends. During the summer months, I've been running the pump about 6 hours per day, but I'm noticing that my chlorine levels seem uneven throughout the pool, and I'm wondering if that's related to insufficient circulation.

I've heard conflicting advice from neighbors - some say 4-6 hours is plenty, while others insist on 12+ hours daily. My pool store recommended 8 hours minimum, but I want to make sure I'm not under-filtering while also being mindful of electricity costs. Does the runtime need to change based on season, bather load, or pool size? What's the sweet spot for maintaining crystal clear water without over-running the system?…more

Can Pool Chlorine Damage Eyes? Safety Tips & Prevention

Before I dump more chlorine in my pool, I need to know if I'm about to blind myself since this is my first time handling chemicals. My eyes always get red and irritated after swimming, and I'm wondering if the chlorine levels I'm maintaining could be causing damage. I don't want to pay for expensive pool service calls if I can handle this myself, but I also don't want to risk permanent eye problems. Should I be concerned about chlorine harming my vision, and are there ways to protect myself without spending a fortune on equipment?…more

How Long After Shocking Pool to Add Algaecide? Complete Guide

The pool service guy insists I wait a full 24 hours after shocking before adding algaecide, but that seems excessive when algae keeps spreading. I have two young kids who are eager to get back in the water, and I want to make sure I'm doing this chemical treatment properly.

Should I wait a certain amount of time between the shock treatment and adding the algaecide? I'm also concerned about when the water will be safe for swimming again. What chlorine levels should I be looking for before adding more chemicals, and how do I know when everything is balanced enough for the kids to swim safely?…more
