How Long to Run Your Pool Pump and Filter Daily - Complete Guide

Every pool season I feel like an idiot asking this, but I genuinely have no idea how many hours my filter should actually be running daily. My kids swim almost every day during summer, and I want to make sure the water stays clean and safe for them. I've heard different opinions - some neighbors say they run theirs 24/7, while others only run it a few hours.

I'm worried about under-filtering and having bacteria or algae grow, but I also don't want to waste electricity if it's not necessary. Our pool gets heavy use with the kids and their friends, plus we've had some really hot weather lately. What's the right balance for daily filter runtime to keep the water properly clean?…more

What's the Ideal Pool Temperature? Comfort, Science & Cost

Every summer it's the same argument. The kids climb out shivering and beg me to crank the heater, but I'm staring at the energy bill thinking about how short our Minnesota season is anyway. Is there an actual *right* temperature for a pool, or is it just personal preference? I keep hearing different numbers — Disney pools, the Olympics, swim lessons — and they're all over the place. What does the science actually say, and where's the sweet spot between happy kids and a heating bill I can live with?…more

Do You Need a Variable Speed Pool Pump? Complete Guide 2026

Single speed pump is killing my electric bill but variable speed pumps cost $800-1500 installed. Pool guy swears it'll pay for itself in two years on energy savings alone. Sounds like a sales pitch but I keep hearing the same thing from other pool owners too. Are variable speed pumps actually worth the upgrade?…more

How Variable Speed Pool Pumps Work - Complete Guide

Woke up to another $400 electric bill after replacing my pool filter, cleaning the skimmer baskets, checking all the connections — my single-speed pump is still draining my wallet on this 20,000-gallon inground pool. My utility bills have been astronomical running the pump 8-10 hours daily, and I'm trying to understand exactly how these newer pumps achieve such significant energy savings.

Specifically, I'd like to know what type of motor technology variable speed pumps use and how they're able to adjust their speed so precisely. My current pump seems to be either on full blast or off completely. What's the RPM range these variable speed units can operate in, and how does that translate to better flow control and lower energy costs? I want to make sure I understand the technology before investing in what seems like a more expensive upfront purchase.…more

How Does a Pool Heater Work? Complete Guide 2026

Since this is my third pool heater confusion this season and I keep getting different explanations from everyone, I'm done pretending I understand how these systems actually work. I want to make an informed decision based on how each system actually operates to heat the water.

Specifically, I'm looking for detailed explanations of gas heaters, electric heaters, heat pumps, and solar heating systems. What are the fundamental differences in how each type transfers heat to the pool water? I need to understand the operational principles, not just basic pros and cons.…more

How to Program Variable Speed Pool Pump - Complete Guide

Nobody warned me that after the pool guy installed my new variable speed pump yesterday, I'd be staring at this digital display like it's speaking ancient Greek. The installer basically ran off after hooking it up and now I'm supposed to figure out how to program different speeds throughout the day.

I get that I'm supposed to run it at different RPMs at different times to save energy, but honestly have no clue where to start. Like, what speeds should I use and when? And how do I actually punch this stuff into the control panel? My old single-speed pump was so much simpler - just flip the switch and forget about it!…more

Can I Leave My Pool Filter On All The Time? Complete Guide

About to run my pool filter 24/7 this summer. Currently I'm running my filter system about 6 hours per day, but I've been dealing with some water clarity issues despite maintaining proper chlorine levels (2.5 ppm) and balanced pH (7.4). My pool gets heavy use from my family and I've noticed the water looks a bit cloudy by evening even after shocking. I'm wondering if I should just leave the filter running continuously to help with circulation and keep the water crystal clear, or if there's a sweet spot for daily runtime that balances effectiveness with energy costs. The pool is in full sun most of the day and we're in a fairly warm climate, so I want to make sure I'm getting adequate turnover without unnecessarily driving up my electric bill.…more

Do Variable Speed Pool Pumps Really Save Money? Cost Analysis

I looked at my electric bill this morning and nearly choked when I saw it jumped $80 last month. My single-speed pump is absolutely killing my wallet, and I'm starting to wonder if upgrading to a variable speed pump would actually make a difference financially. The upfront cost seems pretty steep, but I keep hearing people say they save a ton on energy costs.

I really want to know if variable speed pumps actually deliver on those savings promises, and if so, how long it typically takes to break even on the investment. My current pump runs constantly and I swear it's single-handedly doubling my electric bill during pool season. Please tell me there's hope for getting these costs under control!…more

Can You Run Pool Pump Without Skimmer? Safe Solutions

Every pool owner seems to swear by replacement skimmer baskets, but I'm wondering if I'm about to waste money on this cracked assembly replacement? I have a 20,000 gallon inground pool with both a main drain and skimmer line feeding into the pump. The skimmer is currently letting air into the system and causing the pump to lose prime intermittently.

I'm wondering if I can temporarily close off the skimmer line completely and just run the pump using suction from the main drain until I can fix the skimmer properly. Will this provide adequate circulation for my pool size, and are there any risks I should be aware of? I'm concerned about whether the main drain alone can handle all the filtration needs and if this might cause any damage to my pump or affect water quality during this temporary period.…more

How Solar Pool Heaters Work: Diagnosis & Troubleshooting

According to what I spotted this morning, my solar heater panels are just sitting there doing absolutely nothing while every "expert" keeps pushing gas systems instead. They keep pushing these pricey gas heaters and telling me solar is "complicated" - probably because there's less markup for them.

I want to understand the actual process of how solar pool heaters function before I make any decisions. Do they really just use the sun's energy somehow? I'm hoping to find a more cost-effective heating solution and maybe even explore some DIY options instead of getting ripped off again.…more

Do Variable Speed Pool Pumps Run All The Time? Complete Guide

Apparently my pool guy wants $800 to install a variable speed pump that he claims runs 24/7, but I'm skeptical about whether that's really necessary. I'm particularly interested in understanding how they balance filtration requirements with energy efficiency, and whether the speed modulation eliminates the need for complete shutdown periods during normal operation.…more

How Variable Speed Pool Pumps Save Money on Electric Bills

Noticed my electric bill spiking every summer and now I'm standing in the pool supply store staring at variable speed pumps with no clue if they'll actually help. They're in the pool almost every day during summer, and I need to make sure the water stays properly filtered and clean.

Can these variable speed pumps really reduce electricity costs without compromising water circulation and filtration? I don't want to save money at the expense of water quality that could put my children at risk.…more

Does Variable Speed Pool Pump Need Timer? Complete Guide

Looked outside this morning and my variable speed pump is cycling on and off randomly throughout the day without any timer system programmed. My kids swim every day after school and I want to make sure the water is always properly circulated and filtered for their safety.

The pump has its own programming features, but I'm concerned about what happens if something goes wrong with the built-in controls. Would having a backup timer give me better peace of mind and help ensure the pool stays clean and safe? I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything that could affect water quality when my children are swimming.…more

Pool Filter Runtime: 24/7 vs Scheduled Operation Guide

During my pool maintenance reading, I keep seeing conflicting advice about filter runtime schedules. Some sources say the filter needs to run 24/7 while others mention you can get away with just 8-12 hours daily. My pool is about 20,000 gallons and I'm using a sand filter with a variable speed pump that I installed last season. Right now I have it programmed to run from 6 AM to 6 PM, but I'm wondering if that's enough turnover to keep the water properly filtered and circulated.…more
