Does Pool Algae Consume Chlorine? Understanding Chlorine Loss

About every time the temperature hits 85°F outside, my pool's chlorine levels nosedive to almost nothing, but stay rock solid during cooler days. I'm adding the same amount of chlorine I normally do, but it seems like it's disappearing quickly. A friend mentioned that algae might actually be 'eating' or consuming the chlorine somehow. Is this actually what's happening? I'm trying to understand the science behind it so I can tackle this problem more effectively. Should I be adding more chlorine, or is there a different approach I should take?…more

Can Pool Algae Cause a Rash? Health Risks & Prevention

Around noon yesterday I finished scrubbing down my pool walls but this morning there's green stuff growing back — could this algae be what's causing the rash on my arms? I've been swimming in it a few times and now I'm wondering if that could be causing the skin irritation I've been experiencing. The pool store told me it's algae and that I need to treat it, but I'm curious about the health risks.

Can pool algae actually cause rashes or other skin problems? I'm worried about my family swimming in it, and I want to understand what I'm dealing with before I start dumping chemicals in. Any guidance on how serious this is and what I should do to fix it would be really appreciated!…more

How Long Before Green Pool Turns Blue? Complete Timeline

Our chlorine levels hit 3 ppm after two shock treatments, but every guide says the pool should be crystal blue by now—ours looks like a green swamp. Came back to find it completely green - like swamp water green. The pool store told me about something called the SLAM method and sold me a bunch of chemicals.

I've started the treatment but I'm wondering how long this is going to take? My neighbor said it could be days or weeks depending on how bad it is. The algae seems pretty thick and I can barely see a foot into the water. I've got the filter running 24/7 like they told me, but I'm just anxious to know what kind of timeline I'm looking at before I can actually swim again. Any guidance from experienced pool owners would be really appreciated!…more

Can You Floc a Green Pool? Better Algae Treatment Methods

Since my pool guy insists I need expensive algaecide treatments to clear my green pool, I'm wondering if he's just trying to upsell me when flocculent might work. I've tried shocking it multiple times but the algae just won't die. Someone mentioned using flocculent to clear up the water, but I'm not sure if that's the right approach for a green pool.

I'm wondering if floc will actually help kill the algae or if I'm just wasting more money on chemicals. Is there a more effective method I should be using instead? I really need this thing crystal clear again before my family comes to visit.…more

Can You Vacuum Pool After Shock? Complete Safety Guide

Last night my wife casually mentioned our 20,000 gallon inground pool still looks cloudy after yesterday's calcium hypochlorite shock treatment, and now it's all I can see. I added about 2 pounds of shock around 7 PM, and now this morning I'm wondering when it's safe to start vacuuming.

I have a lot of debris that settled to the bottom overnight, including some leaves and dirt that blew in during a storm. My test strips are showing the chlorine is still pretty high - looks like it's reading around 8-10 ppm this morning. I don't want to damage my pool equipment or create any safety issues, but I'm eager to get the pool cleaned up since we have guests coming over this weekend.

What's the recommended waiting period before I can safely vacuum? Should I wait for the chlorine to drop to a certain level first, or is there a standard timeframe I should follow regardless of the chemical readings?…more

Why Is the Lincoln Reflecting Pool Green—and Why Not Shock It?

I saw the photos of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool gone bright green again, days after they finished a big renovation. I run my own backyard pool, and when mine goes green I shock the daylights out of it and it clears up in a couple of days. So why is the government out there pouring hydrogen peroxide and scraping algae by hand off a national monument? Why don't they just shock the thing like the rest of us do? What am I missing?…more

Can I Cover Pool After Shocking? When It's Safe to Cover

Staring at my pool Saturday morning with shock treatment planned — should I have the cover staged and ready to throw back on or do I need to wait?
The guy at the pool store mentioned something about waiting before putting the cover back on, but I honestly didn't catch all the details - there was so much information!

I'm worried about covering it too soon and maybe damaging the cover or something. How long should I wait after shocking before it's safe to put the cover back on? Is there a specific chlorine level I should be looking for? Any guidance would be really appreciated!…more

Above Ground Pool Problems: Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Our above ground pool faces the exact same maddening issues every single spring, and we're tired of getting ripped off by overpriced pool store "solutions. Between overpriced chemicals and costly service calls, I'm looking to become more self-sufficient with pool maintenance.

My pool seems to have different issues throughout the season - sometimes the water looks off, other times the pump isn't working right, and occasionally I notice problems with the liner or walls. Rather than guessing or getting upsold every time, I'd love a systematic way to figure out what's actually wrong so I can tackle these problems myself and save some money.…more

How to Clear Cloudy Milky Pool Water After Opening

Nobody warned me that buying this house meant inheriting a pool that looks like a giant glass of milk from the previous owner's neglect. It's not green, just really cloudy and white-ish. I can barely see the bottom of the shallow end. I shocked it when I opened but that was about a week ago. The filter has been running but doesn't seem to be helping much. What's the best way to get this cleared up? I have a sand filter if that matters.…more

Do I Need to Drain My Green Pool? Step-by-Step Solution

Despite my husband insisting our algae-covered pool "looks like a swamp that needs to be drained," I'm wondering if the pool store's costly advice is actually necessary. The local pool store is telling me I need to drain the whole thing and start fresh, which sounds incredibly expensive and wasteful. They're also trying to sell me a bunch of expensive chemicals and treatments.

I've been reading about DIY methods like the SLAM process but I'm not sure if that actually works or if I'm just wasting time. Has anyone successfully cleared a green pool without draining? I'm tired of throwing money at this problem and would love to know if there's a realistic way to fix this myself without the nuclear option of starting over.…more

Can I Swim in Green Pool Water? Health Risks & Safety Guide

Pulled back my pool cover this morning and my crystal-clear water had somehow transformed into what looks like green Jell-O overnight. I know it's probably algae, but I'm wondering if it's actually dangerous to swim in or just unsightly? My kids are asking when they can get back in, and I'm not sure what to tell them.

The pool store told me I need to shock it and add algaecide, but they didn't really explain the health risks. Should I be worried about infections or other problems if someone accidentally gets in before it's cleared up? I want to make sure I'm keeping my family safe while I figure out how to fix this.…more

Can You Shock Pool With Liquid Chlorine? Complete Guide

Can You Close a Green Pool? Complete Winter Closing Guide

Our backyard pool is completely covered in thick green algae right now, but with winter coming and two young kids who love swimming, I'm not sure what to do.

I've heard that leaving algae over winter can make things worse, but I'm also concerned about using harsh chemicals with the kids playing nearby. What's the safest approach for families? Should I treat the algae before closing, or are there other winterizing options that won't create bigger problems come spring when the kids want to swim again?…more

Can I Shock Pool After Adding Algaecide? Complete Guide

Spent all morning watching my pool turn green with algae patches and now I'm holding bottles of algaecide and shock with no clue which to use first. But I'm not sure about the timing - can I add both in the same day? Should I put the algaecide in first, or does it matter?

Also, if I can use both, how long should I wait between adding them? Don't want to mess up my water chemistry or waste expensive chemicals by doing this wrong!…more
