How to Know If Your Pool Filter Is Dirty: Clear Warning Signs

Around the pool supply store staring at rows of filters with absolutely no idea how to tell if mine actually needs replacing. What should I be looking for to know when my filter is getting too dirty and needs attention?

I've heard something about pressure readings, but honestly I'm not sure what numbers I should be watching for or what other warning signs might tell me it's time to clean or replace the filter media.…more

Do I Need to Backwash My Pool Filter? Complete Guide

Our pool filter pressure started as slightly higher gauge readings last month but now it's climbing so dangerously high I'm wondering what specific indicators tell me when to backwash.

What are the key signs I should monitor to determine when backwashing is necessary? Are there different procedures for different types of filters, or does the same process apply across all filtration systems?…more

Do DE Pool Filters Need Backwash? Complete Guide + When

Around six months ago I moved into a rental with a DE pool filter that I've never dealt with before and I'm completely lost on whether it needs backwashing. My DE pool filter's pressure gauge has shot up from the normal 12 PSI to about 22 PSI over the past month, and I'm wondering if this means I need to backwash the thing. I've been putting off maintenance because honestly, I'm not even sure how often these DE filters are supposed to be backwashed.

The water clarity has been decent but the high pressure is making me nervous that I'm about to have a bigger problem on my hands. How often should I actually be backwashing this filter, and is there anything special I need to do after backwashing a DE system? I really don't want to mess this up and create an even bigger headache.…more

How Long Do Pool Cartridge Filters Last? Replacement Guide

Between my pool store saying 2-4 weeks and everything online claiming 2-4 months, I'm completely lost on when to actually replace my cartridge filter. How long between cleanings? When do I throw them out completely and buy new ones?

Running my pool daily during summer. Want to stay on top of maintenance but not waste money replacing too early.…more

How Long to Backwash Pool Sand Filter: Complete Guide

Since it's 11 PM and my sand filter pressure just spiked to dangerous levels — need to backwash this thing before my pump burns out overnight. Right now I'm dealing with my sand filter - the pressure has gone up quite a bit from when I first cleaned it, and I know it's time to backwash.

But here's my question: how long should I actually run the backwash cycle? I don't want to waste a ton of water (my utility bills are already high enough), but I also want to make sure I'm doing it properly. Is there a specific time I should aim for, or some other way to tell when it's done? I'd rather figure this out myself than pay someone else to do basic maintenance.…more

Can Pool Filter Pressure Be Too Low? Diagnosis & Solutions

Found out from my wife that our pool filter pressure gauge has been stuck at a weirdly low 6-7 PSI all week and now I can't stop obsessing over it. My 20,000 gallon inground pool has been running fine otherwise, but I'm wondering if this low pressure is something I should be concerned about.

I've heard people talk about high filter pressure being bad, but nobody ever mentions if pressure can be too low. The pump seems to be running, but I'm not sure if the water flow looks as strong as it used to be. Water chemistry has been balanced - chlorine at 2.5 ppm, pH at 7.4, and alkalinity at 110 ppm. Should I be worried about this low pressure reading, and what could be causing it?…more

The pool sand filter that worked fine for years started giving me cloudy water last month but now it's completely dead and those expensive pool store fixes aren't working.

How to Clean Pool Filters: Complete DIY Cleaning Guide

Replaced my pool filter cartridge but now I'm standing in the pool supply store aisle staring at all these cleaning products with no clue which ones I actually need. I've got a cartridge filter system and I'm honestly not sure how often I should be cleaning them or what the actual process looks like.

I keep seeing conflicting info online - some people say weekly, others say monthly. And I have no clue if I'm supposed to just spray them off or if there's more involved. Would love some straightforward guidance on timing and the actual steps so I don't mess anything up!…more

How Often to Clean a Pool Cartridge Filter

Looked all over for a straight answer on this and got a completely different response from everyone I asked. My neighbor, who's had a pool for twenty years, told me once a season is plenty. The pool store said every month without fail. Then a YouTube video I watched had the guy pulling his cartridge out every single week like it was a religious ritual. I have a standard in-ground pool that gets moderate use — the kids swim most afternoons in summer but it's not like we're hosting swim meets.

The pressure gauge on my filter is sitting around where it normally runs, so it's not screaming at me to do anything urgent. But with conflicting advice coming from every direction, I genuinely don't know if I'm already overdue or totally fine. Is there a reliable method for figuring this out, or is it just one of those things where you have to learn your own pool?…more

J-B Weld WaterWeld on Leaking Pool PVC Joint

During the estimate call, my pool guy quoted me close to $200 to cut out and re-plumb a leaking glued PVC joint right at my pump — and honestly that feels steep for what looks like a tiny weeping drip. I picked up a stick of J-B Weld WaterWeld (the 8277 epoxy putty) at Home Depot for about nine bucks, and I'm wondering if I can just knead it up and pack it around that joint myself instead of paying someone else to do it.

My main questions are: will this stuff actually hold against the water pressure a pool pump puts out, and do I need to completely shut the system down and dry the pipe before applying it? I know it says 'cures underwater' on the package, but I want to make sure I'm not just wasting my time with a fix that'll blow off the minute I fire the pump back up.

Is this a real repair I can count on, or am I just buying myself a little time before I have to do the full re-glue job anyway? Happy to do the proper fix eventually, but if this buys me a season I'm all for it.…more

How to Tell if Your Pool Pump Isn't Working Properly

This 4-year-old pool pump is turning my once-crystal-clear water cloudy and stagnant — is it worth repairing or should I just replace the whole thing? I'm not super technical when it comes to pool equipment, so I'm not sure what warning signs I should be watching for.

What are the telltale signs that indicate my pump isn't doing its job properly? I want to catch any problems before they turn into expensive repairs or leave me with a swamp instead of a swimming pool!…more

Do I Need DE in My Pool Filter? Diagnosis & Solutions

I turned to three different pool techs about my 2019 Pentair FNS Plus cartridge system and got three completely different answers about adding DE. My kids spend hours in the pool every day during summer, and I want to make sure the water is as clean and safe as possible for them.

I'm honestly not even 100% sure what type of filter system we have - the previous homeowner left some DE powder in the pool shed, but I don't know if I'm supposed to be using it or not. How do I figure out if my specific filter needs DE, and if so, what's the right way to add it? I just want crystal clear water that's safe for my children to swim in every day.…more

Pool Filter Balls vs Sand: Complete Replacement Guide

Noticed my pool filter isn't performing like it used to — can't afford professional service right now, so is switching from sand to filter balls a DIY job under $100? The pool store mentioned they might work better than traditional sand, but I want to make sure before I make the switch.

Are filter balls actually a good replacement for sand in my filter system? I'm curious about things like how well they filter compared to sand, if they're easier to work with, and whether the maintenance routine changes at all. Any guidance would be really helpful!…more
