This is the third time this season my cyanuric acid levels have mysteriously dropped after being perfect all spring and I'm done guessing what's happening. Now I'm opening for this year and my CYA is reading lower than where I left it. Do I really need to keep adding stabilizer every year, or did I mess up my test somehow?

I thought once you get your stabilizer levels right, you're basically set for life. But apparently that's not the case? Just want to make sure I'm not throwing money at chemicals I don't actually need.…more

I opened three different algaecide advice sources and got three different answers: pool guy says skip it, store says weekly doses, forums are completely split. I see algaecide products at the pool store and some neighbors swear by them, but I'm not sure if it's actually necessary or just extra insurance. Should I be using algaecide regularly, or only in certain situations? I just want to make sure the water quality is safe and clean for my kids to swim in without overdoing it on chemicals.…more

Standing at the pool store listening to this guy insist I need to drop hundreds on winterizing chemicals and equipment for my above ground pool when I'm not even convinced it's necessary.

The guy at the pool store mentioned something about winterizing when I was buying chemicals last week, but I didn't want to seem clueless so I just nodded along. I live in the Midwest where it definitely gets cold in winter - like below freezing for months. Is winterizing actually necessary for above ground pools, or is it just something people do to be extra cautious? I'm trying to figure out what I absolutely need to do versus what's just nice to have.…more

My neighbor closed her pool two weeks ago and keeps telling me I should have done the same, but my water is still sitting in the low 70s°F and I'm genuinely torn. Trying to decide between shutting everything down now in late September versus waiting another few weeks to see if temperatures drop more. I have a 20,000-gallon inground with a mesh safety cover, and I really don't want to pull it off in spring to find a swamp underneath.

Everybody seems to have an opinion on closing timing, but I can't find anyone who actually gives a specific water temperature to aim for. Is 72°F still too warm? Will algae keep growing under the cover if I close now, or does it just stop once I add the closing chemicals and block the sunlight? I'd love to understand what's actually happening chemically so I can make the right call rather than just guessing.…more
