Can You Run Pool Filter Without Sand? Safe Alternatives

Before I discovered my sand filter was the culprit, my pool was eating through chlorine way faster than it should even with perfect 2.5 ppm levels and 7.4 pH. When I opened up the filter tank to check, I discovered that most of the sand has somehow disappeared - there's maybe 20% left at the bottom.

I'm waiting for a sand delivery that won't arrive for another week, but my pool is getting cloudier by the day. The filter is currently running with just the remaining sand, but I'm worried about potential equipment damage. Are there any safe alternatives I can use temporarily, or should I just shut down the system until I get proper sand? I've heard about filter glass and zeolite but don't know if they're compatible with my setup.…more

Do I Need a Bigger Pool Pump? Complete Sizing Guide 2026

Turned out my husband was right when he said our pool water looks like weak tea despite perfect chemical levels, and now I'm questioning if our pump is actually doing its job. My pool is about 20,000 gallons and I have no idea how long it takes for all the water to cycle through.

I want to make sure the filtration is strong enough to remove bacteria and contaminants effectively. How do I know if I need to upgrade to a more powerful pump? What should I be looking for to ensure the water is turning over frequently enough for safe swimming?…more

Can You Run a Pool Pump on Extension Cord? Safety Guide

After planning our pool party for this Saturday, I discovered my pump outlet is nowhere near the pool equipment pad and I'm scrambling for solutions. The pool store wants me to hire an electrician to install a dedicated circuit for my new pump, but they're quoting me over $800 just for the electrical work. That's on top of what I already spent on the pump itself!

Can I just run a heavy-duty extension cord from my garage outlet to save some money? I've got a 12-gauge outdoor cord that should handle the load. I'm trying to avoid another expensive "professional installation" if I can help it - seems like everything pool-related has to be done by a specialist these days.…more

Can Pool Heater and Pump Share Same Circuit? Info Guide

Finally it's midnight and my pool heater tripped the breaker for the third time tonight — desperately need to know if wiring both heater and pump together is causing this mess. The pool store is pushing me to hire their electrician for thousands of dollars, but I'm handy with electrical work and want to do this myself if possible.

Before I start running wiring, I need to know if there are any safety issues with putting both the heater and pump on one circuit. They're both major electrical components so I want to make sure I'm not creating a fire hazard or code violation. Anyone have experience with DIY pool electrical work?…more

Do I Need a Pool Liner? Above Ground Pool Requirements

During my above ground pool setup, my installer insists I need a $200 liner but my manual shows zero requirements for one anywhere. Like, can't the pool walls just hold the water on their own?

Also if I do need one, how long do these things typically last before I'm stuck buying another one? Just trying to budget for the real costs here!…more

Can a Pool Sand Filter Be Too Big? Sizing Problems Explained

During our weekly pool maintenance routine, my husband casually mentioned that our 15,000 gallon inground pool's water has looked consistently cloudy despite my best filtration efforts, and now I can't stop obsessing over what's wrong. The water isn't cloudy exactly, but it lacks that crystal-clear sparkle and seems to have a slight haze that won't go away. My chemical levels are all in range - chlorine at 2.5 ppm, pH 7.4, alkalinity 110 ppm, and I've shocked multiple times with no improvement.

I recently upgraded to a larger 24-inch sand filter thinking bigger would be better, but I'm starting to wonder if I made a mistake. My pump runs at about 45 GPM, and I've noticed that when I backwash, the water doesn't seem to flow very forcefully compared to my old smaller filter. Could the filter actually be too large for my system? I've heard that oversized filters can cause problems, but I'm not sure how to tell if that's what's happening here.…more

Should You Cover Your Pool When It Rains? Complete Guide

Last month I was just confused about whether to cover our pool during light drizzles, but now with severe storms hitting and kids wanting to swim I'm completely panicking.

Does rainwater make the pool unsafe or dirty for swimming? I've heard mixed things about whether rain is good or bad for pool water quality.

My main concerns are debris getting in the water and whether the rain throws off the chemical balance in a way that could be harmful to my children. Should I be rushing to put the cover on every time storm clouds roll in, or is it actually okay to leave it uncovered?…more

Do You Need a Pool Heater Bypass? Installation Guide

Before I connect my new pool heater to the system, it's making this weird whistling sound when water flows through and now I'm wondering if a bypass valve would fix it. The manufacturer's documentation mentions bypass considerations, but I need clarity on whether this is mandatory or optional equipment.

Specifically, I'm concerned about maintaining proper flow rates through the heating unit and having the ability to isolate the heater during routine maintenance procedures. What are the technical requirements and operational benefits of incorporating a bypass valve system into the heater plumbing layout?…more

How Often to Clean a Pool Cartridge Filter

Looked all over for a straight answer on this and got a completely different response from everyone I asked. My neighbor, who's had a pool for twenty years, told me once a season is plenty. The pool store said every month without fail. Then a YouTube video I watched had the guy pulling his cartridge out every single week like it was a religious ritual. I have a standard in-ground pool that gets moderate use — the kids swim most afternoons in summer but it's not like we're hosting swim meets.

The pressure gauge on my filter is sitting around where it normally runs, so it's not screaming at me to do anything urgent. But with conflicting advice coming from every direction, I genuinely don't know if I'm already overdue or totally fine. Is there a reliable method for figuring this out, or is it just one of those things where you have to learn your own pool?…more

Do Cartridge Pool Filters Need DE? Complete Guide

During pool season, is it dangerous that I'm getting conflicting advice about using DE powder with my cartridge filters when I've got kids swimming daily? My pool store said it might help with clarity, but I'm reading mixed reviews online. I've been cleaning my cartridges regularly and they seem fine, but my water isn't crystal clear like I want it. Some people swear by adding DE to cartridge systems while others say it's pointless or even harmful. What's the real story here? Will DE actually help my filtration or am I just wasting money and potentially creating problems?…more

Do Variable Speed Pool Pumps Really Save Money? Cost Analysis

I looked at my electric bill this morning and nearly choked when I saw it jumped $80 last month. My single-speed pump is absolutely killing my wallet, and I'm starting to wonder if upgrading to a variable speed pump would actually make a difference financially. The upfront cost seems pretty steep, but I keep hearing people say they save a ton on energy costs.

I really want to know if variable speed pumps actually deliver on those savings promises, and if so, how long it typically takes to break even on the investment. My current pump runs constantly and I swear it's single-handedly doubling my electric bill during pool season. Please tell me there's hope for getting these costs under control!…more

Electric Pool Heaters: Types, Costs & Installation Guide

I woke up to three completely different electric pool heater recommendations for my 20,000 gallon inground pool and now I'm more confused than ever. Some pool stores are pushing gas heaters hard, saying they're the only real option, but I don't have a gas line to my equipment pad and running one would be expensive. My neighbor mentioned something about electric heaters but wasn't sure if they actually work well. I've been researching online but getting mixed messages about whether electric pool heaters are even a viable option. Are electric pool heaters a real thing that actually work, or am I stuck having to run a gas line?…more

Cartridge vs Sand Filter: Is Switching Worth It?

Three summers of hauling cartridges out of my filter housing, blasting them with a hose, and letting them dry in the backyard — and I'm at my breaking point. The funny thing is it only really feels unbearable when it's above 85°F outside, because that's when the algae pressure picks up and I'm pulling the cartridges every couple of weeks instead of once a month. During the cooler shoulder season the system works fine and I barely think about it.

My neighbor runs a sand filter and swears he just backwashes it every few weeks and forgets about it. Replacement cartridges for my setup run me somewhere around $100–$150 a pop, and they don't last as long as I'd like. I'm seriously considering making the jump to sand — but I want to know what that conversion actually costs, whether I'll regret the water clarity trade-off, and whether the long-term math actually works out in my favor.

Is converting from cartridge to sand a genuinely smart move for a medium-sized in-ground pool, or am I just reacting to a hot-weather frustration? What are the real trade-offs I should be thinking through before I commit?…more

Pool Pump Loses Prime Overnight? Here's the Fix

Found the pump basket completely packed with air again this morning when I went out to check on the pool — same thing that happened yesterday, and the day before that. Once I manually fill the housing with water and get it going, the pump runs beautifully all day with no issues at all. But the second I shut it off for the night and try to fire it back up, it just churns away with a basket full of air and refuses to catch on its own.

This has become a frustrating daily ritual. I have a standard above-ground setup and the pump is maybe three or four years old. Water level in the pool looks fine, and I haven't noticed any obvious drips or wet spots around the equipment pad. I'm not sure if this is a seal issue, something with a valve, or just normal wear and tear at this point.

Is there a way to track down exactly where the air is sneaking in? I'd love to fix this myself if it's something manageable, or at least know what I'm dealing with before calling someone out.…more
